Express Entry: Canada’s Fast Track to Permanent Residency

Express Entry is Canada’s most well-known immigration pathway and remains the choice of thousands of skilled workers each year. It was created to streamline applications and to

match Canada’s labour market needs with highly qualified applicants.

Express Entry is not a program itself but a system that manages three federal programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian

Experience Class. Each program has its own eligibility requirements based on work

Candidates create an online profile and are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System. This score takes into account age, education, work experience, and proficiency in English or French. Periodically, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada issues invitations to apply for permanent residency to candidates with the highest scores.

Applicants who receive an invitation must then submit a complete application with

supporting documents within sixty days. The government aims to process most applications

within six months.

Improving one’s score is often key to success. Ways to do this include retaking language

tests, completing additional education, gaining Canadian work experience, or securing a

provincial nomination. A provincial nomination provides an additional six hundred points,

almost guaranteeing an invitation.

to begin a new life in Canada.
