Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) 2025: What You Need to Know

The highly anticipated Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) for 2025 has been
announced, and IRCC has confirmed that the process will follow a similar invitation-based
model as in previous years.

Under the PGP, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their parents and
grandparents for permanent residence. However, demand far exceeds the number of spots
available, making this one of the most competitive immigration programs in Canada.
For 2025, IRCC will once again use a random selection process from the pool of interested
sponsors who submitted their forms in 2020. Unfortunately, this means that no new applications will be accepted this year. Instead, those who had already submitted an interest in sponsorship form will need to wait and see if they receive an invitation.
Key highlights for the 2025 PGP include:
● Random draw selection from existing interest forms
● Income requirements remain unchanged (sponsors must meet the minimum
necessary income for three consecutive years)
● Alternatives available: Those not selected may still bring their parents or grandparents
to Canada under the Super Visa, which allows extended stays of up to five years per
visit.
While the PGP remains a sought-after pathway for family reunification, many are calling for
IRCC to increase the number of available spots to meet the growing demand. However, to reduce immigration numbers, it is unlikely that there will be an increase anytime soon. If you’re hoping to sponsor in the future, it’s essential to stay updated and prepare well in
advance.
